DAUGHTERS OF
THE REAWAKENING
This photo taken by Gordon Parks at a Black Muslim rally in 1963 captures a sea of Black Women in traditional garments. Their Unity is their power. Their Gaze is their protest. Their Fashion is their armor!
Daughters of the Reawakening is the next evolution of J. Monroe’s acclaimed art series, The Reawakening, which explores Black legacy through portraiture, storytelling, and community revival. Rooted in that vision, this flashmob-style photoshoot brings together women in Harlem for a striking, live editorial moment that honors the Black women who have shaped culture—past and present.
Inspired by the grace of Gordon Parks portrait on the left and the modern flair of tailored pastel fashion, this living exhibit celebrates elegance, power, and sisterhood.
